At Überland Camping in Vlotho, Germany, technology discreetly complements the guest experience. The campsite now uses AVUTEC’s Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system to enable vehicle entries and exits, ensuring efficient, contactless access that keeps traffic flowing and maintains the park’s calm atmosphere.
About Überland Camping
One of six Überland campsites across Germany, the Vlotho location sits on the edge of the Weser River in North Rhine-Westphalia. Surrounded by forest, it offers a family-friendly environment for guests who want to enjoy the outdoors without giving up comfort. Visitors can explore by bike or canoe, or swim in the nearby lake — a perfect balance of activity and relaxation.
Enhancing, not replacing
Überland Vlotho wanted smoother vehicle access during busy arrival times, but without having to rebuild their existing setup. With many guests arriving by car, campervan or trailer, queues and manual check-ins disrupted the relaxed camping feel.
Because the MEWS cloud-based reservation system was already in use, the park looked for a solution that could integrate seamlessly instead of replacing what already worked. For that, Überland partnered with Sicom Computer & Communication, a system integrator known for delivering tailored, reliable access and networking solutions.
Sicom installed a unified system that links MEWS booking data directly to the ANPR cameras placed at the barrier gates — an elegant upgrade rather than a full rebuild.
Smart integration in action
The result is a lean yet powerful setup.
• 4 × AVUTEC Module-X ANPR cameras were installed at the two entry lanes and two exits. Each camera simultaneously recognizes license plates and detects vehicle direction, so only vehicles approaching the camera are checked against the MEWS reservation database. License plates moving away from the camera are already filtered out at this stage, keeping the system efficient by reducing unnecessary lookups.
• Direct integration with MEWS: when a match is found in the MEWS database, the camera’s built-in relay opens the barrier automatically — no keycards, tokens, or additional check-ins required.
Minimal change with maximum impact
For Überland’s staff, MEWS remains the platform they already know and use. The AVUTEC integration simply adds automation based on license plate recognition in the background.
This installation proves that real innovation doesn’t always mean starting over. Überland improved both guest comfort and operational flow by expanding what it already had. Now, guests drive in smoothly, get recognized instantly, and begin their stay without interruption, keeping the arrival experience calm and simple — just as a camping holiday should feel.
